EMDR in St. Louis

EMDR — Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing — is one of the most rigorously researched trauma treatments in clinical psychology. It works on memories that conventional talk therapy often can't fully resolve: the ones that still feel present years later, that flash back without permission, that the body remembers even when the mind has moved on.

I'm Brian Bachman, MA, LPC. I've practiced clinical counseling in the St. Louis area for 10 years. EMDR is one of several modalities I integrate within a whole-person framework drawing on psychology, neurology, and embodied work — because trauma rarely lives in just one of those.

What EMDR Treats

- PTSD — combat, accident, assault, and medical trauma

- Complex trauma (C-PTSD) and adverse childhood experiences

- Panic and anxiety with somatic activation

- Phobias rooted in a specific event

- Complicated grief and traumatic loss

- Performance anxiety in high-functioning professionals

- Intrusive memories that resist standard talk-therapy approaches

Why People Come to EMDR

Most clients arrive at EMDR because traditional talk therapy wasn't enough. They've journaled the timeline, read the books, rationalized the event — and their nervous system hasn't gotten the message.

EMDR works at a different layer. It engages the brain's natural memory-processing system to reduce the emotional intensity of stored experience, often without requiring you to verbally walk through every detail.

What a Course of Treatment Looks Like

  • The first session is an intake and assessment — history, stabilization skills, and identifying the target memories.

  • From there, sessions follow the standard 8-phase EMDR protocol developed by Francine Shapiro, paced to your specific history and capacity.

  • Most clients notice meaningful shifts within 3 to 10 sessions for single-incident trauma. Complex trauma — layered childhood material, long-duration relational injury — typically requires a longer engagement.
